Why Buy Antique Picture Frames

As modern technology makes mass producing products easier and less expensive, it's surprising how many people are turning to antiques to decorate their homes. And certainly that is the case with antique picture frames. Sure a standard discount store frame can look nice, but there's just something about an antique frame that will not only protect your cherished photo or piece of art, but will also draw attention to it. The right frame will simply make a great picture look even better.

But it's not just about the look. Let's face it, even mass produced frames can look nice. But there's an indescribable feel that a true antique can provide. You may not be able to explain it, but when you look at it you know it's there.

For instance if you have a photograph of your great grandparents, wouldn't that picture just look better to you if it were displayed in a frame they once owned? And if that's not possible, you can always display it in a frame from the same era as when the photo was taken. Now you'll have something more than just a border around that picture. The frame and the picture become one, as if they were made for each other. Display that in your home and all eyes will be drawn to it. Almost everyone who visits will surely comment.

And of course these hand made treasures are generally of the highest quality. I'm not one of those sentimental old people that think everything made in the "old days" is just better. The truth is that even modern mass produced frames can still be high quality. But true antiques were generally made by people who took pride in their work. They would carefully handcraft every piece, and the detailing can be truly incredible. Of course there are many skilled framers today that take the same pride and produce frames of unmatched quality. But remember, quality isn't the only reason you are buying an antique frame.

The only problem with antique picture frames is the cost. Go to an antique store or a high quality consignment shop, look at the price tag, and you may end up gasping a bit. Whether the frame is made from wood, gold or silver, you'll probably be a bit shocked at the amount you'll be asked to pay. You may think you don't have a choice if you want that frame, but before you break out the credit card, be sure to look around. And check online. Chances are you'll soon be able to find the frame you are looking for at a price you can afford.
