Art Deco Designs For Your Lounge

In the art world, styles go in and out of fashion all the time. The same applies for Art deco which has been popular since the 20's and is still going strong today.

When you think of art deco you think sleek smooth lines and comfortable, modern materials. Popular materials to choose from include aluminum, stainless steel and lacquered wood with inlay. Your colors have to be bold, especially for the accessories. Earth tones and neutrals would be great on the walls. Or use metallic paints to give a sleek shiny finish. You may accent the wall corners near the ceiling with a stencil or through rag rolling, the method commonly used in the old days. Designs for stenciling include: surreys, ziggurats, lotus or scarab or alternatively use wallpaper with these designs as well as botanical patterns. Include a lot of zig zag and geometrical themes.

The colors associated with this period were black, silver, pink, green and red. Base colors may be beige or cream to allow the vibrant colors of your furnishings that may come in orange, mauve crimson and yellow. Use motifs of nudes, foliage and stylized animals.

Art deco style incorporates retro furnishings and accessories with modern elements. Your furniture will include light-colored visible woodwork and distinct rounded corners. Use a decorative black lacquered panel for your room screen. Pile up accent pillows on your red barrel-shaped leather sofa with black painted metal legs. Your chairs will be made of highly lacquered wood frames, upholstered in lustrous leather, which along with velvet are classic art deco fabrics. Classic art deco style includes tub chairs and oriental artifacts such as a Buddha.

Your floor may be highly polished and lacquered. Or opt for the classic tile designs in black and white checkerboard patterns. Add an area rug with bold geometric shapes, contrasting borders and bright colors on your floor. You could also place one large area rug in the middle of the room then accent it with smaller area rugs around the room. A circular rug with target stripping or a leopard skin rug would do as well. Your area rug is important because its combination of colors can give you the ideal color scheme palette for the rest of the room.

Window treatments were plain or non-existent in the art deco era. If you must have window treatments, opt for simple blinds. Place unframed mirrors on the walls around the room will make the room seem bigger. Colored or stained glass mirrors are also classic art deco. For your lighting, consider fan and bowl lighting fixtures that can be found in local hardware stores. Use table lamps with shades that are fringed at the base. Or go for chandeliers with the sunburst motif.

Frame wall hangings such as movie posters from the 20's in a simple black frame and Plexiglas covering. 70's lava lamps, retro phone models, porcelain figurines and other vintage pieces are reminiscent of classic art deco.

Art deco draws influences from all over the world and is therefore very eclectic, ultra modern and functional still.
