Interior Painting - Interior Design Trends Are Always Changing

Home interiors have changed many times over the years. You can often tell the last time a home was updated by the style that is shown in the home. It seems that most trends change by the decade.
In the 1970's, paneling was a popular wall covering. Removing paneling is a pretty big job so most people paint the paneling to lighten the room. When painting paneling, it's always suggested to prime with an oil primer before painting. Latex paint can then be applied.

In the 1980's wallpaper made a comeback. Even today, people like wallpaper in their homes, but it's not as popular as it once was. When updating, it's best to remove the wallpaper before painting, but it's also possible to paint over wallpaper if the proper steps are taken first.

In the 1990's faux finishing became very popular and to some extent, still is. Textured painting, rag rolling, sponging, suede finishes, and Venetian plaster are the most popular types of faux painting. When painting over a faux finish, there may be some special attention needed to cover the texture. Some skimming may be needed, and with the grittier finishes, sanding is usually required before painting.

These days, a lot of people are painting with solid colors and highlighting their rooms with artwork and furniture. Big pictures, big paintings, and big mirrors are popular. Oval or round mirrors in the bathroom are replacing those big square flat mirrors. Dark colors like Chocolate brown are in, and painting all of the interior woodwork white or off white is considered an update to the home, and very popular. Accent walls are still popular, and there is still a big request for Red.

It's amazing how times change and how the interior design trends change with it. I also find it amazing when I go into a home that has not been updated for years. I recently went into a home that hasn't been updated since it was built in 1958. The home was very clean and original. Some people like the retro look and this home was as retro as it gets. Everyone who has gone into this home loves it.

Maybe we'll go full circle when it comes to interior design trends. I always like the old saying "The only thing permanent in life, is change." It's always exciting to see what's coming next.
