Home Decorating Ideas - Get Creative With Framed Art!

Many people think that framing art work is just for protection and little else, and that frame designs are pretty standard with little room for creativity. Did you know that frames not only compliment the art work but itself can be a work of art? Below are different types of frames that you can use to add a touch of creativity in your home decorating adventure.

Shadow Boxes

Shadow boxes are a great way of giving your artwork a three dimensional effect. Any kind of object can be placed in a shadow box - flowers, leaves, miniature models and origami are often good choices. Even conventional two dimensional pieces like paintings and photographs can be placed in shadow boxes. Presenting art this way creates an illusion of depth because of the shadows that are created and this makes it a little more interesting to look at. By convention, if you're going to use shadow boxes to display art, keep everything small in size. Use small pictures and art work; this will keep the viewer's attention focused on the art work and the three dimensional effects of the shadow box. As mentioned earlier in my other articles, you don't always have to hang art on a wall - place the shadow box on a side table in your living area so that guests can enjoy a close and detailed look at the display.

Color, Color and More Color!

Intensify your art display with a bold mix of colors. Mix and match the color of your frame and matte to find the right balance. Don't forget that the color of the matte also contributes to the overall presentation, so be sure to find a matte color that will compliment the color of the frame. Finding the perfect color match to suit the surrounding theme of your home can be quite a challenging task - a good tip is to contrast with the surrounding wall and furniture so as to throw attention to the art piece. If you have a wall that is light or pastel colored, choose a frame and matte color that is striking and shouts for attention. Let it stand out and be noticed!

Wooden Frames

Wooden frames come in a wide variety of styles and can suit most home decorating themes. Modern or contemporary, classic or rustic, the choice is yours. Even for wooden frames, you have a wide variety of color shades to choose from. Pick a light untreated frame for a rustic raw look or a dark plain shade for a clean contemporary flavor.

Ornately Carved Frames

If you have a decorating theme that borders on the Classical or Victorian, these kinds of frames couldn't be more perfect for your home. Great for family portraits and paintings, these frames provide very rich detail in intricate carvings which themselves are a work of art. Although a little more expensive, these types of frames will work nicely if you're decorating along with antiques and other ornaments.
