Van Gogh - Painting Short Brush Strokes of Life

When I had put my first foot in the world of art, I was mesmerized by the paintings of Rembrandt and Van Gogh. I do not know why I loved Rembrandt, a son of a wealthy man, as I always failed to identify myself with rich men. In my virgin years I desired to become like some of the wealthiest names; but I could never identify myself with those gentlemen, as those men and I had nothing in common. But I could very well identify myself with Van Gogh, as I shared two things with him. The greatness of Van Gogh, in addition to his being a great painter, was that he always owned two things in bulk. One was his madness and another was the emptiness of his pockets. I immediately shared his pocket position, and I had shared his madness a little bit when I was preparing for the first solo exhibition of my oil paintings.

When Van Gogh had entered Paris, he did not know how he was going to make far-reaching influences over the world of art. Nor he knew that he would be remembered for hundreds of years and his life would end only at the age of 37 years. But the city of Paris was under the spell of contagious disease named 'artistic changes' in those days. The colourful lava of impressionism was at its highest temperature. Painters like Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Edgar Degas were in full swing. Van Gogh recruited himself in the group and suddenly became darling of everybody. He worked with many of these artists of towering fame.

It was the time when the lively paintings by impressionist artists done with striking colours were in demand; it was the time when cloth-less Tahitian women painted by Gauguin were hot favourites in market. For the bubbling artist in Van Gogh, too, it was the best of the times, perhaps. The master piece paintings like The Red Vineyard, The Night Cafe, and Bedroom in Arles were the direct result of the Parisian effect on Van Gogh. His colours had become brighter, and the brush strokes pleasantly short. The short brush strokes could be the symbol of his increasing mental unrest due to his deteriorating health, too.

Van Gogh was not only good in using colours. He would become famous among the ladies, too. Charming of the daughter of his land lady is one of the finest examples how he would be loved by the women. Moreover his fame is due to the efforts of a lady. She was wife of his brother Theo who made her so famous after his death.

Classic painting

Watercolour Hake Brush - Friend Or Foe?

There is a lot of debate in the watercolour world over the controversial Hake brush some people loathe them and would quite happily use them to clean their toilet however I personally think that the Hake is a fantastic tool and I have never been without one.

Why? Well it's really rather simple, a hake brush can be used for virtually any brush stroke if you know how to utilise it properly. I sometimes find that I can almost finish a painting without using another brush. This leads to paintings being fresh because you are not messing around with a little tiny brush adding detail that doesn't need to be their.

One lesson every artist has to learn at some point is...DON'T INSULT YOUR VIEWER!! Yes I know its bad etiquette to shout at your readers but what artists have to realise is that when someone looks at your painting they know that the people in the distance have eyes, they also know that trees you have painted have lots of leaves and they also know that if a field is green the chances are that its grass. What's my point! Very simple, if you are using a small brush you will be tempted to paint too much detail you will paint the eyes on that person whether they are supposed to be half-a-mile away or not, you will paint every leaf on the trees and yes, you will faithfully paint every blade of grass in that field etc, etc. With a large versatile brush- like a hake you will treat the subject you are painting in a broader sense and will suggest different elements of the painting thus allowing your viewer the chance to use their imagination a little more which is (I think) the whole point of a painting. With a small brush you are just taking all the fun out of it for the viewer because you will put too much detail in. Acclaimed professional artist Ron Ranson is a particular advocate of this fast and loose approach to painting and has written several watercolour books on the subject.

My suggestion to every Watercolour Artist out there is go out buy a Hake brush (You can purchase discounted Watercolour Hake Brushes at The Watercolour Artist.com) and practice, practice and practice some more. You will find that your paintings become fresher, yours colours will be cleaner because you are not going back into them as much to add superfluous detail, you will also be able to produce more paintings more quickly. On that last point I hasten to add I am not suggesting that we as artists turn into painting production lines but at the end of the day if you are a professional the more productive your painting time is the better.

Acrylic Paintbrush Techniques - For the Portrait Artist

Paintbrushes

There is a dizzying array of brushes to choose from and really it's a matter of preference as to which ones to buy. Synthetic brushes are better for acrylic paints and Cryla brushes are good quality. Again, better to buy a few good quality brushes than a whole load of cheap ones that shed most of their bristles onto the canvas. Having said that a series of fairly cheap hog hair brushes are great for applying texture paste and scumbling.

The biggest rule of thumb when using acrylics is not to allow the paint to dry on your brushes. Once dry they are solid and although soaking them in methylated spirit overnight softens them a little, they usually lose their shape and you end up chucking them out.

It is recommended that portrait artists invest in a water container that allows the artist to rest the brushes on a ledge so the bristles are submerged in the water without the bristles being squashed. The artist then needs a rag or a piece of kitchen towel handy to take away any excess water when I next want to use that brush again. This saves having to thoroughly rinse each brush after each use.

Brush techniques

Brushes need to be damp but not wet if you are using the paint quite thickly because the paint's own consistency will have enough flow. However if you are wanting to use a watercolour technique then your paint should be mixed with plenty of water.

Use a large brush for big areas and for more detailed work use a thinner brush with a point. Hold the brush nearer to the bristles for increased accuracy or further away if you would like more freedom with the stroke. Start your portraits by holding a large brush halfway up to quickly give the background a colour. Artists should not be so worried about mixing the exact colour as they can often mix colours on the canvas by moving my brush around in lots of different directions.

One method for family portrait artists would be to start on the face using Payne's Gray to fill in the shadows before applying a fairly opaque background of flesh tint when the shadows have dried. After that build up the skin tone with lots of different coloured washes and glazes.

Two different methods could be explored here by the portrait artist:

• Mix up a large quantity of a colour on the palette with a lot of water and apply it liberally to the canvas in sweeping movements to create an overall tint.
• Or 'scumbling', which is where your brush is relatively dry, loaded only a quarter full and dragged across the surface in all different directions allowing the dry under painting to show through.

Family portrait artists use the scrumbling technique a lot especially when painting highlights and places where light hits the skin like on the tip of the nose, top lip, forehead and cheeks. The scrubbing motion tends to wreck fine brushes so only use hog hair brushes for this.

The majority of the family portrait is built up using glazes of all different colours. The portrait's appearance can change quite dramatically at different stages leaving subjects looking seasick, jaundiced, embarrassed or like they've seen a ghost and had a lot of heavy nights out.

How to Select a Watercolor Brush?

All the professional watercolor artists understand the importance of a good watercolor brush. However the problem is that most of the beginners do not understand how to select the watercolor brush for different types of paintings. Here is a guide on how to select watercolor brush.

Art Supplies - Buying and Cleaning Paint Brushes

Remember when you were in grade school and painting seemed so simple because your teacher just handed you art supplies and helped wash brushes afterwards? Approaching the medium as a more mature artist, you must learn about paintbrush materials and how to properly care for your brushes.

First, you must decide whether you will need soft or stiff hairs for your paintbrush. Either can be made of natural hairs or synthetic fibers. A thin paintbrush is ideal when you want to do detailed work or precise painting. It allows you to spread paint easily. Hard bristles on the other hand are better for manipulating thick paint. This allows you to create brush marks in the paint that can be seen on the canvas. Vincent van Gogh's work is famous for this technique, as evidenced by his painting The Starry Night.

Most purists will say that natural hair will always be superior to synthetic fiber because of its flexibility and strength. The hair for paintbrushes comes from animals including Sable, squirrel, hog, camel, ox, pony and goat. If the thought of using hair from one of these animals makes you squeamish or you have ideological problems with this, do not fear: modern synthetic brushes have come a long way and are even less expensive than their natural hair counterparts.

The next step is to learn a little bit about paintbrush anatomy. The handle is usually made of wood and is called the ferrule. This holds the hairs or bristles. The tip of the bristles is referred to as the toe.

When deciding which paintbrush to use it is important to know the size of the brush. This can be determined by looking at a number on the side of the handle. The smallest size is 00 followed by 0, 1, 2 and so on. If you are buying online it is important to see a picture of the brush you're purchasing. Two brushes sized the same can actually be very different because of the number of bristles and the width of the handle. This problem can be alleviated if you shop in an actual store or are already familiar with the brand of brush.

It takes a lot of time and money to get the right paintbrush, so it makes sense to take care of them, which includes proper cleaning after each use.

Before you get started, make sure you have mild soap (or turpentine if appropriate) and some tissue. You will also need lukewarm water and a place to dry your brushes.

Wipe off the excess paint using a soft cloth or tissue. Then, rinse your brushes in turpentine if you are using oils, but use lukewarm water if you're paint is water-based. Hot water can cause the hairs of your brush to fall out. Afterwards, gently wash your brushes with mild soap. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary until no color comes out and your brush returns to its original color. Next rinse your paintbrush in clean water. Remember to shake off the excess water after this. If the brushes seem misshapen, use your fingers to gently bring the brush head back to its original shape.

Now you are ready to dry the paintbrushes. Wrap the bristles in tissue or toilet paper while they are wet. When the bristles dry they will contract in this way and will maintain their shape. Let the brushes dry at room temperature. Be sure not to rest them on their head because this is another potential hazard to maintaining appropriate shape.

How to Make a Glowing Washing Machine Table

What do you do to your washing machine that has spun its last cycle? Throw it away? Sell it to the junk shop? Or recycle it? I am not a environmental activist nor a recycling junkie but recycling some parts of your washer can turn out to be a piece of art.

The drum is the best part of the washer that can be turned into a whole new different modern furniture-a glowing washing machine table. How? Here are some steps that can help you out:

Step 1: Carefully remove the drum from the washing machine. Make sure you do not damage a part so it will look polished and new-nobody would even suspect that it is a washer drum.

Step 2: The circular drum usually has three dented areas. Get three long rods with the same length. It should be slightly taller than the drum's length by about 2-3 inches. Get a soldering iron and solder the rods on the dented areas of the drum. This should act like the stand of the table.

Step 3: Purchase a circular glass with similar circumference to the drum. If you want, you can purchase one that is slightly bigger. Drill 3 small holes on the table to fit the 3 rods. This should fit perfectly. Insert the glass to see if it fits perfectly. If it does, you can remove it temporarily to install the lighting inside.

Step 4: Inside the drum, drill a small hole where the cord of the light will pass through. You can purchase a yellow or orange colored Japanese paper to diffuse the lighting of the bulb and to make it look better. Insert the lamp inside the drum and then insert the cord on the small hole you art made. Test the light. It should look cozy and warm with the Japanese paper and the holes on the drum.

Step 5: Unplug the lamp again and then insert the circular glass. Get clear adhesive to secure the drilled holes for the circular glass. Let it dry. When it is already dry, you can use newspaper to polish the metal of the drum and the glass to make it look shiny and new.

Now you have a very chic and modern glass table. Your washing machine is of use even after it is long dead. You can also make an ottoman out of it if you want. It just takes a little spark of creativity.

What is the Art of Chainsaw Carving?

Chainsaw carving is an up and coming art form throughout the world; however, it is not a particularly new concept. The first recorded artist was Ray Murphy who, around 1952, began using his father's chainsaw to carve names and messages to his brother in firewood. Murphy has continued to cultivate his craft for the last 58 years, and still performs his "Chainsaw Sawyer Artist Live Show" during the summers near his home in Maine.

Always looking for new and more unique ways to express himself in his craft, he has made more than 50,000 carved wooden works of art. Some of these include the usual subjects: eagles, bears, moose, squirrels, fish and other wildlife. However, Murphy does not stop there. During his performances, he regularly carves wooden chairs in less than ten seconds, carves names onto pencils which he then sharpens, and even carves up to 16 numbers on a toothpick- all using only a chainsaw.

Since this hobby's inception back in the 1950's, it has evolved over time. Starting around the 1960's many equipment dealers would host simple carving demonstrations at forestry expos and state fairs to illustrate the ease of use of their particular product. During the 1980's this unique hobby received increased attention after an exhibition at the Lumberjack World Championships, which was broadcast throughout the United States. Today, many new artists use the chainsaw primarily as a pre-carving tool, and finish their sculpture with smaller power carving tools and sanders. This results in a sanded wood carving which typically has more detail than a piece of true "chainsaw art" made using only a chainsaw. Finished pieces are often admired and used to accentuate museums, offices, homes and street corners across the country.

Over the years, as this hobby has grown in popularity, additional mediums for carving have also been introduced. The original and traditional medium is, of course, wood; however, ice has become a very popular medium for this art as well. Despite the fact that sculptures created using ice are not long-lasting, they are beautiful centerpieces for buffets at weddings or other social gatherings.

Although chainsaw carving can be a fun hobby or profitable business, it is a difficult and dangerous task to wield a motorized tool, removing wood or ice to reveal an image of beauty emerging from the trunk of a tree or a large block of ice. Despite the fact that these carvings can vary in their exact creation method or medium, and will range from crude images to highly detailed sculptures, they are all fine works of art.

Why Folk Art Is So Popular Today

I have loved folk art paintings since I was a child. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother and her house was full of them. One of my favorites that she had was done by John Roeder. Maybe it's because I spent a lot of time playing in my tree house, that the trees in the picture appealed to me so much. When she died, she left me the painting and it hangs in a place of honor over my fireplace mantle.

One of my favorite paintings was done in 1962 by Bill Dodge. It's called First Trolley to Van Nuys and shows the center of a town filled with people. It is done in vibrant colors and also depicts the buildings in the market like an ice cream parlor and the Hotel Van Nuys.

Another painting that I admire is called Howard in 1944. It was painted in 1988 by Reverend Howard Finster and is done in enamel. I don't know whose smile is bigger, the one in the painting or the one on my face every time I look at it.

There is a subcategory of folk art paintings that depict the world of black Americans. I have a friend who collects these and I found one of a woman reclining in a hammock. She looked so relaxed, that I could imagine what it felt like to lie there myself. I personally don't have any of these in my collection, since I like to collect pieces that I can relate to. Still, they are a joy to behold.

One of the most famous American artists is Thomas Chambers. I don't particularly care for his art. I saw a painting he did of a fishing scene but I chose not to buy it.

There is a water scene that I really like painted in 1940. It's of a swamp house on a bayou and has a Louisiana feel to it. It's called Alligator Fisher and I'm thinking about getting because it reminds me of my cajun heritage, most of my family is from Louisiana.

The painting that has touched me the most features a sad little girl and is called A Letter From My Mother. It's a beautiful painting but it's just too depressing to hang anywhere. I'll find someone to give it to.

My sister also shares my love for folk art. It's pretty funny to me that when we were growing up, she'd cry because she wasn't allowed to play football with the boys and I used to tease her relentlessly and pull her pigtails whenever I got the chance. Now we're very close. She favors animal prints, and I found one that depicts leopards and gave it to her for her birthday. It's too bad my parents didn't let her play football with us. If she could kick the ball they way she liked to kick me in the knee, I'd see to it she played for my team every time.

The Purpose Behind Nude Oil Paintings

Historically, western nude oil paintings depicted the naked male body long before the naked female body. It is interesting to look at why this might have been so.

Some of the earlier paintings of naked bodies aimed to display the physical strength and prowess of males. This was especially true in Greek and Roman art which captured and emphasized the strong muscular features of the male form.

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Greek and Roman artists continued to give attention to naked males rather than females. In fact, there seemed to be an unspoken taboo against trying to depict the naked female form. There appeared to be a sense of shame and sinfulness associated with naked females which did not seem to apply to naked males.

Some art historians suggest that, in the west, this had to do with religious beliefs originating in the Biblical story of Adam and Eve. In this story, Eve was considered a temptress who had persuaded Adam into the sin of eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge.

In modern art, nudity has been more liberally depicted with artists using it in a variety of settings and styles. The naked human form has been painted in impressionist compositions, as fantasy art, abstract art and in cartoons.

Artists choose to paint the naked body for a variety of reasons. Firstly, there is the beauty of the natural, unclothed body that is considered worth capturing. There are also the various shapes and forms of the body that artists depict in order to make statements to challenge the religious, cultural and social beliefs of their times.

For instance, different body shapes were favored at various periods in the history of most western cultures as can be see in their oil paintings. The Canvas Art of Piet Mondrian

Pieter Cornelis Mondrian Jr. (Piet Mondrian) was born in the Amersfoort area of Netherlands on the 7th of March, 1872. He had five siblings - four brothers and a sister. As his father was a drawing instructor and his uncle, a student of Dutch painter Willem Maris; Mondrian got an early introduction into the world of art. In accordance with the wishes of his father Mondrian also became a teacher. Side by side with teaching, Mondrian also worked as an artist creating many impressionistic paintings. However, in 1892 Mondrian shifted to art fulltime with his entry into 'Amsterdam's Academy for Fine Art'.

Most of his paintings untill 1908 showed the influence of Symbolism, Dutch Impressionism and still-life painting. A series of canvases which Mondrian created from 1905 to 1908 are the earliest foretaste of the abstract art that he was soon to produce. For two years after 1908 he experimented with cubism and symbolism exclusivly.

Having seen the original works of Cubist art by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Mondrian  was inspired to go to Paris in 1911. While in Paris, his work 'The Sea' (1912) clearly showed the influence of Picasso and Braque. Cubism in the French capital led him to create several paintings centering around trees including 'Flowering Apple Tree'. It was also in Paris that Mondrian started creating an abstract art style of his own. 

Piet Mondrian returned to Holland in 1914. He started limiting himself to geometric shapes and colours further, and developed his abstract art style called Neo-Plasticism. In Holland in 1917, he co-founded De Stijl which had prominent group members including Georges Vantongerloo and Bart van der Leck. The movement was a quest for the laws of balance in not just art but also in life. Mondrian's writings on abstract art appeared in the 'De Stijl' periodical.

In 1919, Mondrian was back in Paris and he started creating paintings that were grid-based. In the 1920's he exhibited with De Stijl but left the group in 1925. In 1931 he joined the artist association  'Abstraction-Création'. The intellectual liberty of post-war Paris proved beneficial in making Mondrian embrace pure abstract art for the remaining years of his life. 'Schilderij No. 1', a lozenge work which Mondrian finished in 1926 demonstractes a highly extreme form of minimalism.

World War II and an upcoming German invasion forced Mondrian to move from Paris to London and then to New York, where he settled in October 1940 and remained till his death.  In New York, Mondrian joined the 1936 founded American Abstract Artists organization. In 1942, he had his first one-man show at the Valentine Dudensing Gallery. Very large works such as 'Broadway Boogie-Woogie' and the uncompleted 'Victory Boogie-Woogie' marked the pinnacle of Mondrian's career. Piet Mondrian developed pneumonia and died aged 71, on February 1st 1944.

With all this being said, let's note, however, that most people still rather like landscape paintings. A number of very famous landscape artists became well known for concentrating on specific areas. In some cases it could almost be tantamount to obsession if you consider that Paul Cézanne, for instance, painted around eighty versions of the Sainte-Victoire mountain located near his home in Provence, France. He wanted to represent it as it looked to him throughout the year, with different weather.

In the seventeen century Holland saw the first European painters representing seascapes, Vermeer and Rembrandt. Since this time there has been a noted recurrence of sky and water themes for some landscape painters, like for instance the well-known English artist JMW Turner. Turner was fist noted for his representations of the sea and skies in violent storm conditions. This said his later works point to the future development of abstract painting by blurring the previously clear line between the water and the sky. French artist Claude Monet's developed his technique for painting landscapes involving water by doing so in close proximity to his subject matter, which would sometimes involve painting from a small boat. American painters Homer and Wyeth, both renowned landscape painters, were also noted for the admirable way they managed to represent the effect of light on water surfaces

In our area, the Bartlett pear tree, sour wood, maples, dogwoods and oaks are blazing with color. As early morning sun touches each tree, I want to go to my easel and paint, paint, paint.

As an artist, how do we decide what color to include in these beautiful fall paintings? Everywhere there are colors that we want to try to mix, textures, and shapes that highlight the center of interest.

Can't you just see all the beautiful paints on your palette? But, how to decide on colors that best represent your inspiration?

So, look through your artist eyes, and consider the following: Cadmium Yellow, Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Pale, Orange or maybe Burnt Sienna which one? Just the selection of this color is a big choice.

Red is a fall favorite, which color to use ... Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Red Deep? How do you mix the beautiful color of dogwood leaves?

Blue and green are very important also. Furthermore, fall color is different than in spring and summer, particularly the greens. It is preferable to mix greens from colors used elsewhere on your painting. Since the sky is a large part of the painting, would Cerulean Blue be better than Cobalt Blue?

Following are steps to look at while pulling this painting together, creating a pleasingly constant, harmonious picture of good composition, color and an inspirational story.

1) Composition:

Use the nine patch to place your center of interest.

2) Color Harmony:

Reds: Cadmium Red and Orange, mix just a little Alizarin Crimson to either of these to create bright red fall color.

Yellows: Lemon Yellow and Cadmium Yellow, add Burnt Sienna, making light, medium and dark yellows.

Blues: Try Cobalt Blue with Alizarin Crimson, good sky colors.

Greens: Lemon Yellow and Cobalt Blue. Beautiful subdued greens result from this mixture.

How to Draw a Tree

Our mother Earth is blessed with varied trees, be it every day deciduous trees, native to America or Gulmohars & Mango, native to India. Trees & leaves come in all sizes, textures, and shapes. They could be big, tall, small, shady, spiky, or rounded. In fact, every tree changes its colors and character according to the weather. Therefore, choose the tree you want to illustrate, while we provide you with basic guidelines.

Things you will need:

1. Pencil
2. Eraser
3. Paper/ Canvass
4. Colors (Optional)
5. Paint Brush (Optional)

Basic & Simple Guidelines to draw a tree:

I. Observe your Tree: You can either draw from a picture or observe a real tree. Try to break the tree in basic shapes, as it will facilitate with drawing the basic outline. Now, observe the contour of the bark & branches, the color shades, the shape & texture of the leaves, and the overall personality of the tree.

II. Outline of the Tree:
1. Trunk - With a delicate hand, draw two vertical lines, parallel to each other. Both these lines should be curved at both ends.
2. Draw a triangle that will sit on the trunk of the tree
3. Draw three circles inside the triangle, one circle on top and two below it. This will define the dimensions and proportion of the tree.

III. Enhance
1. Bark - Draw a wide 'V' on the top end of the Trunk.
2. Branches - You can now start drawing the branches of the tree. The branches should be thick to begin with and as they branch, should become thin.
3. Twigs, Flowers, or Leaves - Outline the tree with curvy lines to define it. Give it dimension by adding layers using curvy or boxy lines to. You can also detail its leaves or fruits.

Once the shape has been perfected, it can be darkened and the unwanted lines be erased.

VI. Coloring/Shading the Tree:
The trick to make your tree look graphic is to give it appropriate shades and lighting effect. For instance, the branches should be visible in some places and covered with leaves in another. The area near the trunk can be darker compared to the top of the tree due to sunlight. Alternatively, a shady effect of the tree can be given on the ground. You can also draw overlapping crooked lines on the trunk of the tree to give it a seasoned look.

Finish: Take into account a few lines, detailing, and shadows to make your tree look authentic and realistic.

His Most Famous Painting - North Shore, Lake Superior - Lawren Harris

Canadian painter Lawren Stewart Harris or Lawren Harris was known to have pioneered the distinct Canadian style of painting in the early twentieth century. He made numerous paintings inspired by the primitive landscapes of northern Canada. "North Shore, Lake Superior," painted in 1926, is one of his most memorable works. He made this oil painting on a 102.2 cm x 128.3 cm canvas. Harris used soothing cool colors, such as light blues, white, grey, and a little amount of brown in this animated painting.

The background of Lawren's painting shows quiet, snow covered hills. The right upper corner is covered with grey white fluffy clouds. In the foreground, there is a tree trunk at the shore of the lake, placed right at the centre of the painting. The tree is stripped bare of its foliage and branches. The frost and the icy winds of the Arctic have smoothed its rough bark. There is a long slit running vertically across the trunk. In spite of its withered condition, the tree stump still stands with its roots held firmly in the ground. There is a very visible presence of light in the form of bright sunrays descending from the left corner of the picture. The light illuminates the silhouette of hills and the screen of clouds on the horizon. The rays of light falling on the slit of the tree trunk give it a 'Surreal,' three-dimensional effect. The combination of vast space, muted color tones, and the mystical rays of light give the painting a mesmerizing effect. This amazing work of art evokes the feelings of spirituality and tranquility.

Lawren Harris was a follower of theosophy. He was fascinated with the theosophical aspect of nature. His paintings were not mere imitations of nature, but had deeper symbolic meaning. It was a popular belief that the tree in the "North Shore, Lake Superior" really signified Harris himself who had survived major hardships and a nervous breakdown in his life. Some art critics even felt that Harris' painting was actually a metaphorical representation of the major discord that Canada was going through in that time. Robert C. Sibley the author of "Northern Spirits" used this painting as the cover for his book.

Desiccant Packs - Funny Name But a Powerful Tool

We have all seen desiccant packs. However, can we describe their use to anyone else? Most of the time we get them as part of the packaging material of a product we have purchased and they end up going into the trash. Nevertheless, these little packets can be quite a useful addition to your toolbox.

Simply put, a desiccant is a drying agent. Removing excess humidity from the product packing material of products sensitive to moisture, is the primary use of desiccant packs. Packaging materials from electronic products are the most common source of these small self-contained packages with which consumers are most familiar.

Rice is a frequently used "low-tech" alternative many of us may have used. Do you remember the few grains of rice in the saltshaker? The purpose was for the rice to remove excess moisture from the salt.
Other than product packaging and shipping, are there other uses for these little sachets? Should the consumer be stashing them away in a drawer or toolbox for later use? Let us look at a few options.

Uses for desiccant packs, commonly called silica gel packs:

1. Remove excess moisture from soaked cell phones or other electronics. With all electronics, remove the battery as quickly as possible to avoid as much damage as possible. Through shaking, toweling, and whatever other means are possible, remove as much of the visible water as you can. However, do not use heat devices such as a hair dryer as this can do further damage to the electronic device. Cover the device in a bowl of silica gel packets overnight to remove any remaining moisture.
2. Keep submergible housings on underwater cameras free from water and fog from condensation by adding silica gel packets inside the casing along with the camera.
3. These desiccant packs will be an additional level of insurance when added to zipper storage bags that contain various electronics or batter chargers.
4. Keep firearms and ammunition free from moisture in high humidity areas. Add desiccant packs to your gun safe to keep rust at bay. Do not forget to change out the packs regularly to keep them functioning effectively. These packets will normally be larger than those found most often in consumer electronics packaging. Check with your local firearms dealer.
5. Preserve photographs and documents by placing them in an airtight container with desiccant packs to ensure protection from excess moisture.

There are other desiccant packs other than the silica gel packs. While these are more familiar to us, other drying agents work as well or better. Kraft has a pack composed of an alumino silicate clay compound, which they claim to be more economical than silica gel. This product controls moisture in contained environments in many different industries, including pharmaceuticals and electronics.

Tips For Flower Photography

The main tip that you need to know is the focus, where and what you are going to focus on. Is your focus would be on the flower, petals, stamen. So if you will use the auto focus that would give you a good photo. Also if you are not lucky enough to get the light, than on the sunny day you can have few tips. For example if the flower is located in the direct sunlight, than obviously you cannot wait till evening. So just provide shade to flower by someone holding a scarf.

How to Build Your Photography Portfolio

If you're just getting started in photography and want to work with models, you will need to build a portfolio. But how do I do that you ask? This is a good question, and one that's asked frequently. There's a phrase in the industry called "Time For Prints". Basically how this works is you photograph a model at no charge, in turn he/she models for you. The model gets free headshots for their book or website, and you get samples for your book or website. This is a very common technique. I highly recommend this avenue to building your portfolio. Shoot about a dozen models so you can have some samples to show future clients. Plus, it helps you become more comfortable with the process. The more experience you gain, the more comfortable you become. The more comfortable you become, the more you focus on the headshot session instead of fooling with equipment.

I would shy away from running an ad in the newspaper; you never know who's going to show up at your door. Instead, go to websites that models or new models visit. There are several model websites on the web where you can find models willing to do TFP. When posting, be upfront and explain that you're fairly new and want to build a port. (short for portfolio). You should get some answers back. Again, make sure the model knows upfront exactly what you are willing to do. NO surprises. You don't want the model to call you later and request fifty 8 x 10's when you only assumed she wanted one. You can expect a model to bring someone with them. Rarely do they come alone. For the most part, most girls will bring their moms, or a relative. Guys usually come alone. If you have some photos, mount each one in a plastic photo protector. It looks professional. Don't use the flimsy ones, get the stiff kind. Have them sitting on a table or chair nearby. It's a great way to break the ice when your model arrives.

Another preferred method of building a portfolio is to shoot friends. Your client won't care who is in the photo, as long as it's professionally done. Actually, shooting friends is what I would try first. It's a lot more relaxing and if you mess up, no big deal. Don't concentrate on just shooting female models. There are a lot of guys that model and they need a portfolio also. Ask some of your friends to sit for you, or relatives even. Again, it doesn't matter who they are, you're shooting headshots and building a nice port in the meantime. And that's the goal.

What is the Holga Camera?

While the Diana camera was invented by the Great Wall Plastic Factory, Hong Kong, in the 1960's, the original Holga was invented 20 years later by Mr. T.M. Lee of Hong Kong.
