Kids Love to Explore Art Techniques

In art classes children love to express themselves with their own creations in visual art. Kids love to explore art techniques when they are given a variety of art supplies- they will create masterpieces that speak for themselves. Some kids like to cut paper and paste, some kids like to color with markers, some like to sculpt with clay or stick objects together in an assemblage. Sometimes children need free expression with art without the restraints of a set project with a specific outcome in mind. Let their hands and mind work together and see what becomes of it.

Classes are available in many areas that are very affordable, check the internet or local library for classes in your area.

Free Expression a Must-

Kids love to explore art techniques, so free expression in art is just as important as instructional art. Art teachers need to grasp both means of introducing children to art and allow their students to create either through any artistic means they desire (and is available) or through a set of instructions where a specific art fundamental is learned and carried out. If children are given the artist tools, they will create. Any child who says they are bored just needs a caring parent to put out a small array of various art supplies and tell that bored child to make something to hang up on the wall.

Give Them the Tools for Creativity-

I, being an artist,  have many different art supplies, and have specific less expensive ones I let my kids experiment with... however any family doesn't have to spend a fortune on art supplies- Here is a list of supplies that should be in any home with children and would cost less than $30 to get to whole list. The best time to shop for these items is during July and August so to take advantage of all the back to school sales.  Always use coupons when possible!!

  • Classic and bold colored Crayola markers
  • A large variety of colored sharpies
  • Pad of drawing paper
  • Scissors
  • Elmers school glue and Elmer's glue stick
  • Oil Pastels
  • Watercolor paint
  • Paint brushes- many sizes
  • Plastic table cover to protect table
  • Air dry clay
  • Red, Blue, Yellow, and white tempera paint
  • Paper plates or foam egg crates for paint pallettes
  • Pencils, erasers

Protect the work area and let kids create. You will be surprised at what they make and also what they say about their creation. Parents- if you're stressed- sit down for 10 minutes and make something mindless yourself- you will be surprised at how you will relax and forget your troubles. Kids love to explore art techniques...give them the supplies and they will have tremendous fun.
