Amsterdam's Wonderful Art

When it comes to art holidays, Amsterdam has lots to offer. The city itself is like one ongoing exhibit. With a welter of up-to-the-moment street art, galleries of all descriptions, and vast museum collections, Amsterdam offers no end of aesthetic pleasures.

Edgy & Alternative

Amsterdam boasts a vibrant art scene everywhere. Wander about and feast your eyes on cutting-edge street art. Poetry, graffiti, stencils, and sculptures adorn every available surface. Studio Apart and boutiques like Hanazuki and Wolf & Pack feature urban art exhibitions.

Scope out alternative art at places like Plan B in Herengracht. An independent "artists initiative," Plan B is devoted to promising artists not yet connected to galleries. Platform 21 features lectures, workshops, and exhibitions about the creative process.

Agentur, in the Volkskrant Building, sponsors film shows and art exhibitions at local venues while offering a new artists' residency program with studio space on-site. To see artists at work, drop by the studios at Open Ateliers.

Classically Contemporary

A profusion of contemporary art characterizes the Jordaan. Over 40 avant-garde galleries specialise in everything from the Rockarchive's iconic photography to Gallery Vassie's modern works by artists like Lee Miller. Leading-edge galleries include Torch, Galerie Diana Stigter, and Galerie Fons Welters. You'll also find up-and-coming venues like Gabriel Rolt, Motive Gallery, and Martin van Zomeren.

The waterfront warehouse district has the Paul Andriesse gallery with works by top Amsterdam artists Jean-Marc Bustamante, Marlene Dumas, and Thomas Struth. 2x2 Projects, Gist, and Art Affairs are all nearby.

Stroll along the Lijnbaansgracht canal to see the works of well-known artists like Dennis Adams and Robert Barry. Scoot over to De Pijp and discover galleries like Upstream for up-and-coming artists.

Museum Delights

Following extensive renovations, the Stedelijk Museum and the De Appel Contemporary Art Centre are both set to reopen early in 2010. Here you'll find 20th-century artists like Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall. There's also De Kooning, Judd, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Both museums are sponsoring many exhibits at alternate sites prior to reopening.

The Rijksmuseum displays Holland's largest assemblage of art from the 15th through 20th centuries. Paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer include Rembrandt's Night Watch and Vermeer's Woman Reading a Letter. The collection also displays works by Frans Hals, Jacob de Wit, and Ferdinand Bol.
